Europe bets on free software: Euro-Office arrives

Euro-Office: a free office suite made in Europe.

After so many years of dependence on proprietary software, Europe is starting to take free software seriously. One of the first results is Euro-Office, a free office suite you can already install on your computer.

01 · Europe seeks digital sovereignty

European public bodies, schools and businesses have spent decades tied to programs and services they don’t control: licences renewed every year, closed formats and data stored elsewhere. There is growing agreement that this technological dependence is a risk, and that free software is the way to break it.
Euro-Office is one example of that shift: a project driven by European companies such as IONOS, Nextcloud, XWiki and OpenProject to offer an open, auditable alternative under European control.

02 · Galician schools did it more than 10 years ago

In Galicia this is nothing new. With the Abalar project, Galician education committed to free software in the classroom more than a decade ago, bringing GNU/Linux and free tools to thousands of students and teachers. Piztu follows the same path: free tools that anyone can study, modify and share.

03 · What Euro-Office is

  • Word processor, spreadsheet and presentations in a single program.
  • Compatible with Microsoft Office formats (DOCX, XLSX, PPTX) and with the open OpenDocument formats (ODT, ODS, ODP).
  • Free software under the AGPLv3 licence, based on the ONLYOFFICE code.
  • Available for Linux, Windows and macOS.

04 · How to install it

Download the installer from the latest Euro-Office release. On Debian and derivatives (such as computers running Piztu), take the .deb file for amd64 and install it by double-clicking or from the terminal with sudo apt install ./euro-office-*.deb. There is an .exe for Windows and a .dmg for Mac.

Try Euro-Office in your lessons: open a document you already have and see how it looks. The more we use it, the stronger the free alternative becomes.
